We are constantly looking to expand our staff pool. If you are interested in joining us, please send your full resume and relevant samples of your work to news@campusobserver.org. All applications should come complete with a cover letter and will be considered equally.
We are looking to expand not only our pool of staff writers, but also in other areas that would be necessary in the running of this newspaper. We also welcome applicants interested in areas of public relations, advertising, photojournalism, web design and information technology. If you think you can contribute in other areas not listed, please state clearly in your application.
While specific technical skills wield considerable weight in any application, it is paramount that the applicant possesses a good sense of the role the mass media – in particular, newspapers, play in citizenship and democratic discourse. This extends to applicants in all areas.
All successful applicants will join us as interns on an internship programme, which is loosely modelled after “the comp” at The Harvard Crimson.
However, the length and depth of the internship program will be personalised and commensurate with the amount of relevant experience and expertise the applicant possesses. It typically would not last for more than one academic year.
Completing the internship programme would qualify the applicant as a staff member.
Outstanding journalism applicants may further qualify as associate editors. This not only allows applicants a part of the editorial deliberation process, but also the opportunity to be considered for editorial positions.
It would also be helpful for journalism applicants to bear in mind that enrolment on both NM2220 (Introduction to Media Writing) and NM2221 (News Reporting and Editing) classes offered by the Communications and New Media Programme at NUS, or a prior journalistic internship at an established news outlet would lessen your time as an intern.
If you have not been invited to write for The Campus Observer, the internship is the only way to apply to be a writer on the paper.
